Everyone down there at 126 Arch street are super cool, and the shows are just as good. This friday the Gallery will open a show called "Spacing Out", brought to you by the Williamsburg Cinder Gallery. The show explores physical space, and we are told to expect alot of sculptural instillations. The show exhibits works by artists: Shawn Reed, Chris Duncan, Diane Barcelowsky, Sto, David Horvitz, George Ferrandi, Kevin Hooyman, Kelie Bowman, Matt Furie, Hilary Pecis and more. Spacing Out, opens March 7th at Space 1026 from 7pm-11pm.

A.V.O.W. at the Painted Bride Art Center

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/R7yE5vV6OTI/AAAAAAAAARI/HwXbNFs7DN4/s400/1001418avow2_d.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169152599810259250" />
Amps, Volts, Ohms, & Watts (A.V.O.W.) is a group exhibition curated by Sean Stoops. Luo and Shao are masters of this 1000 year old art form, and this is the second time the clay studio has exhibited Yixing Teapots. These pots are considered superior to other teapots due to the zisha clay used, which absorbs some of the tea flavor and "seasons" a pot, which produces better cups of tea each time used. This month brings us the work of Louise Barteau-Chodoff, Danielle Bursk, Rosalyn Richards, and Nyugen Smith. Danielle Bursk exhibits a series of extemely intricate drawings, and Rosalyn Richards shows us her colourful oil paintings. I realy found Nyugen Smith's work to be interesting. Smith has created dwelings or shacks made from found objects. I also really enjoyed Louise Barteau-Chodoff's video instillation. The show runs through the first of March.

Close and Castle at Wexler

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/R54RtVZozzI/AAAAAAAAAPw/fLtXWEajLDA/s400/rocker.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160581693549629234" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/R54RnlZozyI/AAAAAAAAAPo/0O7e7pkqHvk/s400/Self-Portrait-2004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160581594765381410" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/R54RiVZozxI/AAAAAAAAAPg/fYysqBjSQyA/s400/bud.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160581504571068178" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/R54Ra1ZozwI/AAAAAAAAAPY/dQYLQ9MTf-4/s400/self.port.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160581375722049282" />
Wexler Gallery has outdone itself this time. Featuring works of world renowned artists, furniture designer Wendell Castle and artist Chuck Close. Chuck Close is best known for his abstract, yet photo realistic giant portraits. Somehow, Close is able to creat encredibly realistic portraits by forming a grid of colourful circles and painted shapes. His work is generally large, viewd up close the works look abstract and dont define any perticular object. As you move away from the peices they become more in focus. Wendell Castle has been desiging and building furiture for around 40 years now. His furniture plays with the balance between sculture and functionality. This show complements gallery 339's current exhibit "Philadelphia Masters." Art students, go to one of these two gallerys to write your gallery reviews. It has been a couple of months since I have payed the gallery a visit, so I was shocked and appalled to find the gallery has had its last show and already and closed. Apparently there was a splitting between the two gallery owners and the gallery has thus closed. Joshua Liner, former owner, is now planning on opening a gallery in NYC sometime in the spring of 2008. He is advertising that his new gallery will feature works of such artists formelly reprerestented in the Lineage Gallery such as Ron English, Jeremy Fish, Ben Tour, Futura, and a many other "big name, and internationally recognized" artists. This is incredibly sad. The Lineage gallery was one of the best places in Philadelphia to see Post Pop and Street inspired works at the internationall level. The gallery was big enough to attract such great names, but still small enough that you could talk with the artists at many of the openings. In 2006 i had the opportunity to meet one of my heroes Ron English at the gallery and have a breif conversation about the show and his recent work. I have always enjoied the Philadelphia art sceen, and celebrated the differences we have from the omnipresent New York. I wish Joshua Liner luck with his new Gallery, and hope that New York City will be as kind and accepting of him as Philadephia was.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/R539f1ZozsI/AAAAAAAAAO4/D2HEahHur_0/s400/n55400686_30263197_7056.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160559471388839618" />
Sillydelphia Creator Ian A. Brown's work features a series of ink on paper pieces depicting different types of reflections and surfaces, just like the title implies. Many of these pieces depict te rich textures of water, sometimes almost looking photograhic in quality. Susan Tiger's work explores colour, and her series depicts different objects which seem to either disolve into or form out of the surface itself. You will be able to purchase artwork and gifts from Space 1026 members. This is a good opportunity to get some great artwork for your holiday shopping list. The leftovers from the space 1026 auction featuring prints from members and some internationally recognised artists such as Shepard Fairey (though no Faireys are left), are still up for auction online at Ebay until Monday. Finally, if you enjoyed the Mummer sewing class Space 1026 offered a while back, there will be a 24 hour sew-a-thon held from noon Saturday Dec.15th to noon Sunday December 16th at the space in preperation for the up coming mummers parade. The even will be hosted by the Vaudevillains, the 1026 Mummer Brigade. You are able to watch the sewing frenzy online at www.vaudevillainsnyb.com, and make donations if you feel so inclined. A $5 donation is reccommended for this event, and will get you 24 hours of fun. So if you are looking for that perfect print or mummer costume for that special someone this holiday season head down to Space 1026 this weekend.

David Kessler "Shadow World" and Candace Karch"Lost and Found"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/R1xW0GI-1GI/AAAAAAAAANU/sdd0z9H57R8/s400/minidiablo_f8x10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142080327551734882" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/R1xWumI-1FI/AAAAAAAAANM/2TU_QXU6aHA/s400/dk1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142080233062454354" />
The Bambi Gallery brings this show of two very different photographers. Designed by L.A. Based artist Sean Duffy, the gallery has been transformed into a jungle of speakers and turntables. 18 variable speed turntables are spread through out the gallery with a crate of old records in front of each turntable. The sealing is an tangled web of audio cables and painted speakers of various sizes and shapes. The wires all tower up from each turntable forming pillars of wires. Visitors to the gallery are able to play whatever records they want at whatever speed they chose. The experience reminded me of my own thought processes thinking about music, jumping around the room and mixing different genres. The collection of records is quite eclectic. When I first entered the gallery a recording of Christmas songs was playing, then i added a record of VooDoo chants, and later added Mayan Drum Circles to the mix, We also added on some spoken word/ comedy albums. There was a performance done on December 6th at the exibit, and there is another one scheduled for December 13th at 7p.m. featuring DJ Thomas Devaney:

"Thomas Devaney is the author of A Series of Small Boxes (Fish Drum, 2007) and The American Pragmatist Fell in Love (Banshee, 1999). In the spring of 2007 he presented "No Silence Here, Enjoy the Silence," at the Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia) for its exhibition "Locally Localized Gravity", and in 2004 he led "The Empty House" tour at the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site for "The Big Nothing." Devaney reviews poetry for The Philadelphia Inquirer and is a Senior Writing Fellow in the Critical Writing Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Riffing on The Grove's fetishistic application of speakers and use of LPs as cultural conduits for personal experience, Devaney's response to the installation, entitled "Sympathy for the Devil," explores a pivotal moment from his Irish-Catholic adolescence in Northeast Philadelphia."

NEVER FORGET! Huge digital prints, on multiple sheets of paper as tall as the print center's gallery walls loomed over the packed opening. Some of the images are printed on paper that looks like it came from a pad of paper that had gotten wet then dried out in your attic for the past 10 years resembling the delicate aged texture of dried leaves portrayed in the images. One image was printed on sheets of paper made out of woven scotch tape which resulted in the images having large squares on them resembling pixelation. This is one of the best photo shows I have ever been to, and I strongly encourage you to go see this while you can. The show opened last night September 14th and will run through November 21st at the Print Center.

First Friday & Fringe Festival

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/RuGvIx8M1uI/AAAAAAAAAHc/a9KpPGLWpcU/s400/header%5B1%5D.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5107556017794504418" />

Every year Philadelphia hosts its very own Fringe Arts Festival, featuring art, music, and performances of the "fringe arts." I reccomend that everyone goes and sees something at teh fest. Many of the performances do require that you purchase a ticket in advance. After your show, go out and grab a drink, the night life just seems better during the fest. Plus today September 7th is also Philadelphia's monthly First Friday event. All galleries should be open with lots of great art to check out.

ART JAIL

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_a7P8iBkOfGE/RuGr3R8M1sI/AAAAAAAAAHM/_SYkngLSijs/s400/artjail_logo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5107552418611910338" />
The Barnes foundation has put in a proposal for its new location on Museum Row, where the new facility will feature the foundations multi-billion dollar collection. In addition to the works on display the building will also house some new for profit aspects of the Barnes foundation, including "art slotmachines" and a home shopping type channel that will be broadcast from the center, featuring a store on location selling Barnes foundation based merchandise. The big twist in the proposal for the new facilities is that the foundation wants to also house the Youth Study Center, Philadelphia's Youth Detention hall. The concept here is that the troubled youth can learn about art and culture, while the Youth Study Center can learn about the culture of these young Philadelphians. The new combined facilities points the Barnes foundation in the direction of Dr. Albert C. Barnes educational intent for the foundation. The plans for the new building feature some eccentric architecture exhibiting such things as huge flat pannel tellevisions. Using giant inflatable objects and recordings of crowded events, Sweitzer investigates reactions to personal space. The inflatables represent people, and the recordings help set the mood. This is an interesting installation, and I loved the concept. Show runs September 7th through October 5th at the Nexus Gallery. Opening reception is Thursday September 13th, from 6-10pm. The Falling Cow Gallery's Hodgepodge is a collection of over 100 works by artists/musician Tim Bowen. Starting in 1976 the show exhibits over 30 years of this Philadelphian. It is interesting to follow the the growth and evolution of Bowen's work over the decades. I especially enjoy his oldest work and newest work. Here is just a taste with some of my favorites. The show runs at the Falling Cow Gallery through September 25th.
<img style="display:block;
